National Stations Improvement
Programme (NSIP)
Revitalising stations across the UK
The 2007 Department for Transport (DfT) White Paper - ‘Delivering a Sustainable Railway’ -
highlighted the requirement for better customer facilities at ‘intermediate’ stations in the UK . In
response, the Government created the National Stations Improvement Programme (NSIP), a
£150m investment to deliver improvements across medium sized stations in England and
Wales.
Collaborative working
The NSIP programme is a joint initiative between Network Rail, the DFT, the local train
operating companies (TOCs) and contractors. Spencer works in partnership with these
organisations to deliver better stations for passengers across the UK.
Spencer Rail has completed a large number of NSIP projects, this has included work at:
Southend
Shoeburyness
Chafford Hundred
Billericay
Brentwood
Colchester
Marks Tey
Waltham Cross
Our in-house approach to open-book working and the previous company experience of
partnership; working on the Network Rail Multi-Asset Framework and Station Delivery
Partnership; ensure Spencer Rail has the correct skills to work effectively within complex
stakeholder projects experienced on the NSIP.
Added value delivery
The programme of investment continues until 2014 and Spencer is a proven and proficient
collaborative partner for delivering future NSIP projects. One of the principal advantages
Spencer Rail brings to the programme is a full complement of in-house capabilities. This allows
coordinated works to be delivered by Spencer Rail alongside NSIP work to limit passenger
disruption and reduce the costs associated with separate delivery projects.
Passenger satisfaction
Sharing the vision and understanding end user requirements is important for Spencer Rail, as
the purpose of NSIP is to enhance the passenger experience. Across East Anglia as part of the
NSIP, Spencer has installed new CIS systems to provide detailed and accurate customer
information, better directional signage encouraging efficient passenger flow and better facilities
for waiting customers.
